Rila Monastery

This is the largest monastery in Bulgaria – 5 floors, visible 4 of them. Monastery “St. Ivan Rilski” was built on the site of an old hermitage in 927-941 by Ivan Rilski (according to some writers of his students) in Rila Mountain. In the courtyard of the monastery today in 1335 is built defense tower and a small one-nave church of the local feudal lord protosevast Hrelyo. The tower is the oldest building in the monastery and style belongs to the architecture of the Tarnovo Artistic School. At the top of the tower, a chapel “St. Transfiguration” with valuable frescoes from the 30s of the 14th century.
Ever since its foundation, the monastery became literary and educational center. Great pedagogical activity it develops West University, who in the revival founded here a monastery school. The monastery shelters Vasil Levski, Ilyo, Gotse Delchev, Peyo Iavorov and others.
Over the years, the monastery was burned three times, in 1840 made a new iconostasis of the church. Today the ensemble of the monastery covers an area of 8800 square meters, of which 5500 square meters building area. Monastery wings built at different times of 4 and 5 floors, surround on all sides the only yard in the shape of an irregular pentagon.

Monument
In 1976 became a national historical reserve in 1983 under the auspices of UNESCO. The Rila Monastery preserve manuscripts, books and documents from the 14th century – 19th century, and the museum – lots of antiques and church plate, rods, icons, weapons, coin collection, etc..
